My name is Charles Schroeder and I am happy to be your counselor at The Taylor Opportunity Center. I started in Taylor as a drafting teacher at the old Taylor High School which is now the current Main Street site. My major was Industrial Arts and I attended SWTSU which is now Texas State University. I continued my education and received my Masters degree in guidance and counseling from the same university. After teaching drafting and architecture for 5 years I started my counseling at Taylor Middle School at the 7th street campus. After being a counselor at West End, Northside, Twelfth Street, THJohnson, The Taylor Alternative School, High School, and Middle school, I have worked my way back to where I feel I am needed the most. My goal as a counselor at TOC is to assist students with academic planning, career exploration/planning, and personal/social development. The majority of these students in the Opportunity Center know who I am and have worked with me in some capacity.
The following programs are located at our campus: 1) Discipline Alternative Education Program 2) Achievement Program 3) Garden Club and 4)TOC Food Pantry.
The DAEP is structured with the student in mind that has had difficulties in their regular classes on campus. We have a structured environment in place that assists the student in being successful in learning what is expected of them to survive in the global society in which we live.
The Achievement Program is a credit recovery program available to 11th and 12th grade students. There is an application and interview process in order to be considered. Please contact Mr. Schroeder (counselor) or Mr. Roth (Principal) for more information. If the student is currently attending Taylor High School, please consult their school counselor to inquire about the application and interview process. The counselors divide the alphabet as follows: A-C Ms. Barnes, D-M Miss Anderson, and N-Z Miss McCoslin.
The Garden Club sponsored by me is in its beginning stages. Currently the planting bed has been established and is being made ready for planting. Students will study and learn all about the process from planting to harvesting to canning.
The TOC Food Pantry is headed up by Mrs. Hubbard, with me assisting. TOC students may take home donated items as their needs arise.
I am looking forward to my first year at the opportunity center full of growth and progress for our students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and I will be happy to assist you.
